An area in the Middle Ganga Basin, lying around Monghyr, Bihar, has been selected for delineation of fluvial palaeofeatures. The investigation is based on aerial photographs LANDSAT MSS and TM data products and ground data. Digital enhancement of LANDSAT MSS and TM data by linear contrast stretching and ratioing has been found to be highly powerful in identification and mapping of subtle fluvial palaeofeatures. Based on the above interpretation, a summary of the fluvial palaeo-history is presented.Keywords

The Himalayan region has experienced a number of M8 and M5-M7.8 magnitude earthquakes in the present century. Apart from the release of strain builtup due to convergence of the Indian and Tibetan plates by seismic activity and aseismic slip, the tectonic activity in the current tectonic regime has also effected morphotectonic changes due to uplift, tilting of drainage basins, shifting or diversion of rivers and their tributary channels. Seismicity is mainly due to activity along numerous active faults, which trend parallel or transverse to the Himalayan mountain belt. In the outer Himalaya or the foothills, lying between the Himalayan Frontal Thrust (HFT) and the Main Boundary Thrust (MBT), some active faults have generated major earthquakes. The present article illustrates two such faults in the Pinjaur Dun and in the HFT zone at Kala Amb, Himachal Pradesh. Palaeoseismological study carried out at Nalagarh in Pinjaur Dun has revealed Late Pleistocene earthquakes along the Nalagarh Thrust (NT) that separates the Palaeogene rocks from the Neogene Siwaliks. The study shows evidences of at least two large magnitude earthquakes that rocked this region. The repeated reactivation of NT and HFT substantiates high seismic potential of the northwestern outer Himalaya and calls for more extensive study of palaeoearthquakes in this vastly populous mountainous region.Keywords

During the course of mapping of active faults in the northwestern Outer Himalaya (using CORONA photographs, multispectral satellite data of Indian Remote Sensing satellite (IRS) and aerial photographs) we have identified an isolated basin of Quaternary and Holocene sediments resting unconformably on Siwaliks, around Parduni, in the northwestern Dehra Dun (Doon) valley. The region around Parduni is tectonically very complex and is traversed by active thrust faults to its north and south and strike slip faults to its east and west. The uplift and southward shift along the strike slip faults on both sides and the Markanda thrust edging to its south, the Parduni has developed as an intradun basin and now remains isolated from the main Doon valley. Based on the OSL age data widespread deposition of Quaternary alluvial fan sediments, the dun gravels, is inferred to have initiated around 34 ka BP in the western part of the Doon valley, while the sedimentation in the Parduni Basin started only around 27 ka BP, which more or less ceased around 20 ka. The southward movement of the Parduni Basin as a piggyback basin is ongoing with recent alluvial deposits covering the dun gravels tectonically overlain by the Siwalik sandstone and mudstones in the hanging wall of the Markanda thrust. The present communication discusses the development and evolution of the Parduni Basin vis-a-vis the configuration of the Doon valley in the northwestern Outer Himalaya and the prevalence of tectonics expressed or demonstrated in the active Himalayan Front.Keywords
